National Board of Review— A Look Back (1929)

Tomorrow, Awards Season begins with the announcement of the National Board of Review's picks for 2007. Last year, the results were up online at 1:15 PM PST/4:15 PM EST.

In anticipation of their announcement, I wanted to look back to the very first National Board of Review Top Ten from late December of 1929.

A #1 film was not chosen, the list was presented alphabetically, as follows:

BEST AMERICAN FILMS (Top 10):
Applause
Broadway
Bulldog Drummond
The Case of Lena Smith
Disraeli
Hallelujah!
The Letter
The Love Parade
Paris Bound
The Valiant

BEST FOREIGN FILMS (5):
Arsenal
Homecoming
The Passion of Joan of Arc
Piccadilly
Ten Days That Shook the World

And now, I'd like to pressent my Top Ten Films of 1929, alphabetically with #1 film separate (American and foreign films inclusive):
Blackmail (#1)
Alibi
Applause
The Cocoanuts
The General Line/ The Old and the New
The Iron Mask
The Love Parade
The Man with a Movie Camera
Pandora’s Box
People on Sunday

Blackmail (1929): Excellent camerawork and visuals, as well as clever use of the new sound medium, elevate the simplistic plot in this exciting suspense genre classic.
