Best Superbowl XLVI (2010) Commercials

This year's Superbowl ads were pretty bad on the whole (don't I say this every year?). For once, the game was better than the commercials! I offer my favorite five (relative to the pack), below:

#1. SNICKERS: Betty White. Funny and clever! A one-two classic TV legend punch. Love Betty's delivery of: "That's not what your girlfriend says!"





#2. BUD LIGHT: Asteroid 2010. I know it was of the "juvenile" variety but this one struck me as funny.






#3. US Census 2010. Just love the "cast". And that classic Bob Balaban delivery!: "So just the 300 million people who are coming will know the location."




#4. BUD LIGHT: Light House: Kinda funny idea. "There's Bud Light in the fridge made of Bud Light."





#5. FLO TV: Don't miss a thing 2010 Super Bowl. OK.







I think all the movie trailers came off poorly, especially ROBIN HOOD (how do you screw that up?); the best would therefore have to fall to ALICE IN WONDERLAND by default.

Of the TV promos, I liked the short but hilarious Craig Ferguson ad at the top of the show ("Many people watch the Superbowl for the commercials... just like my show in fact.") The much-talked-about Late Show Leno/Oprah/Letterman ad would have been brilliant if (as initially conceived) it included Conan O'Brien, but what does Oprah have to do with it (other than a holdover from a much better previous ad taking on the Oprah/Letterman rivalry)?

Did you catch the Motorola: Megan Fox in the tub ad.... they used a hand model! Megan Fox notoriously has "toe-thumbs" (considered her only looks "flaw")....

Best Superbowl XLIII (2009) Ads

This year's Superbowl ads were pretty lackluster. I offer my favorite five (relative to the pack), below:


#1. AUDI: The most original and interesting concept; thought this one really worked.

#2. CAREERBUILDER.COM: Love the, "Hey Dummy."

#3. CASH4GOLD: Yes, a little sad, but I really laughed... "Goodbye old friend."

#4. HULU: Not genius, but amusing.

#5. COCA-COLA: A nice ad.



I think all the movie trailers came off well, STAR TREK perhaps the best; and for ones that were premiered (I least this is the first time I've seen it), I thought G.I. JOE came off strongest. Of the TV promos, I liked the Leno ad.

Best Superbowl XLII (2008) Commercials

Another Superbowl, and the ads proved yet again to be a far cry from years past, but still there were a few I really liked. I offer my favorite five, below:

#1. COCA-COLA: Stewie and Underdog floats at the Macy's Day Parade duke it out (loved it!) [Fourth Quarter]







#2. BUD LIGHT: Will Ferrell as "Jackie Moon" [his SEMI-PRO character] and his various "ad-libs" ("Bud Light: Suck one", etc.) [Fourth Quarter]



#3. T-MOBILE: Charles Barkley adding Dwayne Wade to his top five ("That's why I don't eat shrimp," etc.) [Second Quarter]






#4. DORITOS: mouse trap ad (OK, bordering on stupid but I did like it) [Second Quarter]








#5. AMP ENERGY (Definately weird... but you got to love the WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT) [Fourth Quarter]








Arguably this was the most eyecatching commercial, but I didn't like it much:

E-TRADE: Baby buys stock [Third Quarter]










Of the movie trailers, I think THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN ("You may find Narnia a more savage place than you remember") came off best, but the foot thing in the Adam Sandler DON'T MESS WITH ZOHAN was pretty funny in an Adam Sandlery way. Of the TV promos, I liked the HOUSE ads, particularly the first one that had Hugh Laurie riffing the Superbowl theme on his electric guitar.
